Marketing online | Linking On Your Blog
Alot of people talk about external linking to their blog which is
great for SEO and getting ranked in the search engines. The thing is alot of people forget about linking in their content which is so powerful because it gives google the opinion that your blog is an information blog.
There are a two different internal linking methods to optimize your blog and I will cover them here in this post.
- Internal Linking
- Outbound Linking
Internal Linking
Internal linking is a very powerful linking strategy in googles eyes. It’s pretty simple to implement as you only have to link to other pages or posts on your blog from the content that you are writing.
Alot of people have plugins like other relevent posts which is a form of this but to actually have an anchor text in your post near the top pointing to another post is excellent. Lets look at an example.
You have a post on your blog which is called Local Dog Shelters.
In the new post that you are writing the words Local Dog Shelters
comes up then you link this anchor text to your older post.
Very Powerful and google will love you for it.
Outbound Linking
There are two forms of outbound linking, linking out from your
content and the second is linking out from your blog. The
thing you have to be careful about here is that where you are linking to has to be relevent to your content.
Linking out from your content should be done in the bottom
half of your post. It is a good idea to make sure the anchor text
you pick is a keyword that you might want to rank for an some stage.
All ways remember that if you are doing a product review don’t
link to the products main page or any page that might take some
of those commissions away from you.
About 8 – 10 links is plenty.
Linking out from your blog is done from your wordpress dashboard
under the links section. The best way to pick links to link out from
your blog is by using the keywords that you have choosen for
your blog and link to whats on the first page of google for those
keywords.
So if one of your keywords for your blog is greyhound racing tips
go to google and enter greyhound racing tips and link out
to one of the url on the first page.
Use about 10 – 15 links.
Those of you that are in the widlink system has this done for
them in the form of the blogs of fellow students but if you
add more links to page one on google as well you will have
some extra power.
Affiliate Links
This is a definite NO NO when you are optimizing your blog post. It will drop your blog alot of places in the search engine rankings if you use them. There are a few plugins that are free that will cloak your affiliate links the most well know is Simple Link Cloaker which can be found by doing a search in your back office under plugins.
Hope you enjoyed these tips and if you have anything to add good,
bad or to just say hello please do so in the comment area below.

Hi Glyn
Thanks. Very useful tips. I haven’t done this at all, but now you’ve taught me about it, I will.
I didn’t know affiliate links inposts had a negative effect in the search engines. Why is that?
Anyway,good and useful post. Ta.

Hi Glyn,
I forget to do internal linking a lot which is the easiest in my opinion. I need to remember to do a better job at this. As far as outbound linking, now that’s a new concept i haven’t heard of. Need to check into that. Thanks for the tips!

Hey Glyn,
I was reading your post and I couldn’t find anything wrong with what you wrote. It’s dead on. But so many folks will try one thing way too much thinking this is the one thing that will get them noticed in the search engines.
I firmly believe that all the above should be done in a balanced, human like way. Doing this and being consistent at it for a while will show solid benefits soon.
Good information,

Hey Glyn,
Good post covering some important aspects to SEO but a few things I should add. With linking internally, make sure you do ir from the top half of the body text as if done down the bottom it won’t account for much.
Also with linking to affiliate products being bad for your rank, why? This is not true unless the product is not related, but surely that site you are linking to is optimized for similar words. The Affiliate clocker plug in you mention only cloaks your link from prying eyes, not from Google. Not sure if you knew this but the way it was sentenced implied otherwise..
Otherwise, nice post with some good tips for the new blogger.
Thanks for sharing, sorry if I was too picky

Hi Glyn,
Thanks for the great post about linking. There is so much to know about SEO for sure and understanding how all these inbound and outbound links work is imperative to our getting good favor with Google. I leaned a lot about internal linking from this post.
Thanks again

Hi Glyn,
Thanks Glyn.
I was not aware that affiliate links would have that impact on your blog optimization…actually I have been simply using the Budurl shortening system for any affiliate links in my blog.
However, I now have “Ninja Link Cloaker” system that completely protects me from affiliate commission theft but unsure about the impact with the Big G!
The real challenge for me is to decide exactly what niche(s) I am going to be in and then use my long tail key words for SEO. At the moment all I am ranking for is my surname and as that’s not Jeffreys, the page ranking is completely inconsequential.
I will not stay in the IM niche that’s for sure but where it will be is still up in the clouds a little!
Thanks again Glyn for your thought provoking post

Hi Glyn,
Great points, linking, especially internal, is something I have got to get the hang of, just a question of linking the keywords and still making it readable.
Many thanks
Simon
Thanks Glyn,
I sure had learned something new today.
All the while I only focus on keywords to be appeared in my blog post. Is only now I realize that links within the content of a post can be so much help in SEO.

Glyn,
Very informative and useful tips. It’s always fun to play around with Internal link when writing a blog post. Great stuff!
Hi Glyn,
I will add on top of what Alex quoted. Too much linking on a post can eventually lead to “page rank bleeding” with Google.
Alex is right that affiliate link to a product that is related to your post will not create a problem with Google. Cloaking can also have a negative effect with Google. Their publishing guidelines clearly states that.
Other than that, the rest is spot on.
Thanks for sharing, and keep up the great work at your blog.

Hey Glyn,
Great post mate, I have been spending a bit of time recently on the seo of my blog. I did’t realise the importance of linking out to other sites I was spending time getting inbound links. It is a fantastic idea to check 1st page on google for your keywords and link to them sites and certainly something I will be doing.
Cheers for the post man
